Safe C Drive Cleanup Checklist

Use this order when you need space quickly but do not want to damage Windows or lose personal files.

Low-risk first

  • Close running apps and restart once.
  • Empty Recycle Bin after checking it.
  • Clear temporary files through Windows Settings.
  • Clear browser cache through the browser settings.

Review before deleting

  • Downloads folder.
  • Desktop videos, archives, installers, and screen recordings.
  • Old phone backups, virtual machines, game captures, and project exports.

Advanced items

  • Windows.old after upgrade stability is confirmed.
  • hiberfil.sys only through Hibernate settings.
  • WinSxS only through official Windows cleanup tools.
