Storage Sense: What It Deletes and Which Settings Are Safe

Storage Sense is Windows' built-in cleanup automation. It is useful, but the Downloads and cloud-file settings deserve attention.

Recommended setup: Enable temporary file cleanup and Recycle Bin cleanup. Leave Downloads cleanup off unless you use Downloads as a temporary folder.

What Storage Sense can delete

  • Temporary system and app files.
  • Recycle Bin items older than your selected time window.
  • Downloads older than your selected time window, if enabled.
  • Locally cached cloud files, depending on OneDrive settings.

Safer settings

For most users, a monthly schedule with temporary file cleanup is enough. Recycle Bin cleanup can be set to 30 days or 60 days if you want a recovery window.

Settings to check twice

Downloads cleanup can remove installers, invoices, documents, or exported files that were never moved. Cloud file cleanup can make files online-only, which is safe if syncing works but inconvenient without internet.
